I've always been a fan of the Unreal series of games, ever since I played Unreal Tournament (not 2004) back in 2001 or 2002 in the office of my high school newspaper. The other editors soon moved on to Serious Sam and other games, but Unreal Tournament always had a special place in my heart, so it was with gladness that I found the upperclassmen EEs playing Unreal Tournament 2004 in one of my school's labs in freshman year. They too moved on (mostly to studying for finals), but I played UT2004 on and off since then, and recently, I've gotten a lot of the frequent visitors to #Cemetech on IRC (IRC.EFnet.net, if you want to join us) interested as well. First I played many games with comicIDIOT (previously known as some18kanal0n3), then Tari, with whom I played one or two games way back in the day, joined us as well, and with him he brought rcfreak0, who hangs out at #Cemetech but doesn't really post here, TheStorm, who you might also know as Jonimus, and even Komak57, who has long lurked on Cemetech, back since the earliest days of the current version of the site. Long story short, it's a lot of fun, and if you play ut2k4 (or are just a fan of FPS games) you should definitely join us for a few rounds.

comicIDIOT:
List of maps on Google Docs.
Kerm: Thanks comic!
_player1537: Thanks
Indeed! Once we get a good lot of us in the private server we should do a photo!
Unreal Tournament has stuck with me as well. I played the Demo back in 2003 and was hooked. Wasn't until this last June I bought 2004 for my MacBook. With Unreal Tournament III on my console and coming to Mac in Spring of 2010, I continue, and shall continue, to get my fix.
My favourite thing about the series is that the action is always there in massive 31-bot battles. I often play on 1-on-1 maps with about twenty or more bots to keep the action constant. I'm not a fan of online gaming - as people with better accuracy and tactics show no mercy on the inexperienced - but I love to play with my friends online.
Though, none of my local friends play Unreal :(
We played an excellent bunch of games this evening in some CBP1 and CBP2 maps I hadn't seen before, as well as lots of old favorites. I was joined by
The Tari,
Komak57, and briefly,
rcfreak0. ComicIDIOT / comicsans will have screenshots and possibly even an [epic] video montage coming soon.
Man, sounds like a lot of fun. I can always use some good FPS time to break up the monotony of RPGs at times. If only I had UT 2004...

You should join us on IRC, I believe comicIDIOT knew of somewhere to buy it for like $4. One of my friends, ElderofMagic, has been nagging me for ages to go buy UT3, which is apparently only $13 or so now.
@Ultimate Dev'r, some of the players don't have insane PCs, there's tons of maps for us to play, and we all enjoy it. It's mostly an ain't - broke - don't - fix situation. ComicIDIOT, Swivelgames, rcfreak0, and I duked it out in three more games this evening.

Why not upgrade to UT3?
Too much graphix for them
I bought it, then heard about them playing UT2k4 and was bummed no one else had it
I have UT3, but I find 2k4 to be rather more compelling in many situations due to its (formerly) vibrant modding community which UT3 has yet to match.

UT3 isn't demanding on lower quality levels. I've played it on an ATI FireGL v5200m without issue (basically an x1600m with even worse game performance). For those with REALLY slow PCs, they can play it at 320x240 (yes, UT3 supports that resolution)

"Oooh, let me pick up this pixel and use it to shoot that pixel! Oh no, low on ammo; oh, there's a pixel of it over there." And wouldn't the health and weapons GUIs take up the entire screen?
I'll be getting UT3 in Spring. I'm eagerly waiting the release of the Mac demo!
Here are a few Pics i got from the game... Movies coming soon!

Yes I know they suck, I just used regular windows screen cap, quicker during in game...

Take 640x480 and throw out half the pixels and that is what you end up with. You should totally try it (set your resolution to 640x480 and screen percentage to 50%), its technically playable...

Here's a screen capture at the end of a game between Kerm & I:
He had no idea how big his head was and I was laughing so hard at times watching his head bobble around the map. I took a few screenies but this one shows how oblivious one is to their own head size.
There was a point in the game when I was facing one way and his characters face suddenly filled my whole screen - I didn't see his translocator in front of me. I
literally jumped from my chair.

Er, you're actually throwing out 3/4 of the pixels. Pixels are square.[/quote] Thanks calc84, I meant to call him on that.
@comicIDIOT glad you put that one up. I look forward to sharing the secrets we found on that map with others. Now we need to look at some of the other maps we have from the same clan.

Indeed! I've been searching for maps with secrets recently
It's be awesome if bots were smart enough to figure this out too! [Offline] Games would become more interesting.

Not necessarily. Most TV formats use non-square pixels (and hence most video formats support variable pixel aspect ratios - if you view a widescreen DVD frame with a 1:1 pixel aspect ratio it appears stretched vertically for this reason). The popular DOS resolution 320x200 (16:10) was typically displayed on 4:3 monitors, hence the various pixel aspect ratio correction options in emulators and ports of DOS games. Decently written modern graphics engines (eg the Quake III engine and later id engines) allow you to specify a particular aspect ratio that overrides the one calculated by dividing the resolution's width by its height.
Er, not that that's especially relevant, but I only have the first Unreal Tournament (and that uses a software renderer for best performance) so can't really join in.
