So the 2009 season of Torchwood is officially starting in the US this coming Monday on BBC America, and I thought it would be appropriate to post up my review of the 5-episode mini-season. As I'm sure that you saw from the trailer, it begins with every child in the world stopping in their tracks. With the deaths of Owen and Tosh at the end of the last season, it's up to Captain Jack Harkness, the accidentally-immortal leader of Torchwood, Yanto, and Gwen to figure out what is going on and save the world, etc, etc; Reese, Gwen's fiancee, helps out as well. This miniseries upholds the dark, soaring narrative of the series to date, builds up the conflict and the players beautifully, and reaches a nerve-racking climax in the fifth of the five hours. Unfortunately, this means that the resolution is a quick "Oh look, magical sci-fi solution!" in the last 20 minutes, which I was quite disappointed in. There's also two events (one the destruction of a place, one the elimination of one somewhat-major character) that make me doubt whether the show will continue next year if ever. Nevertheless, you should definitely watch this show when it starts on Monday. See below for a picture I took of the poster on the side of a New York City bus.

p.s. Kerm sucks at Welsh spelling Honestly, the slightly cheesy solution wasn't even really important to me. The last 2 episodes were quite possibly the most poignant episodes of any tv show I've ever watched. As far as continuation is concerned, there is always Torchwood 4 (2+India both seem to have been disbanded, based on one of the emails shown here), and obviously Jack has the potential to come back after he does whatever it is he's doing. The current rumors seem to suggest he'll be appearing in the last D.T. Doctor Who specials.
