I'll try to download AIM (it comes for linux right?).

Get GAIM instead. (if you can)

Or, if you don't want to download anything, you can use gmail's built in google talk if you enabled that feature. I have my GAIM setup to use my google talk, so just go to gaim.com, log in, and if you have the google talk feature enabled, you should be able to add me to your list and message me
I tried to follow the install instructions for AIM for Linux as best I could for a good 15minutes but I haven't gotten anywhere. Can somebody walk me through this. I'm following the instructions word for word, but for some reason it is not working. Sad This is what I am attempting to use. And I downloaded the one for "Other" OS's since Ubunutu was not mentioned in any other one.
For root permissions on Ubuntu "Breezy Badger" (5.10):

1. Press ALT+F2(brings up a run menu)
2. Type x-terminal-emulator
3. When the terminal comes up, type in sudo passwd, and make the new password passwd
4. Type su and enter your password as passwd
5. You are now root

(Note: I've recently used Ubuntu as a live cd for CLFS, and I promptly switched it out for another live cd; it's too a slow and there's really not much on it. A much more informative, yet still n00b-friendly distro would be Knoppix (as bloated as it is Very Happy))

if that doesn't work type 'xterm' instead

EDIT: I KNOW! use www.meebo.com as your instant messenger! (don't forget to sign up for an AIM/yahoo/MSN account first) - it doesn't need to be downloaded or installed, yet is still quite decent

I was able to get myself logged in as root just fine. Everthing else is what I couldn't figure out Smile

Edit: Kllrnohj: I'm on Meebo. My SN is disturbinglycool (don't ask why). What's yours? Cool

Wait...i thought you couldn't get a root prompt?

OK, try this, go to ctrl-alt-Fx and for the login name type 'root' instead of 'patrick'. THEN do the 'apt-get update' and 'apt-get dist-upgrade'

SN's:see profile
I didn't know how to before. But I figured it out when the instructions told me to log in as "root".

look in the thread called something like install ubuntu linux. i discuss in great detail there how to use partition magic and how the partitions should be set up
You can install ubuntu to preety much any filesystem...however, I would recommend either reiserfs, ext3, or xfs.

NTFS,FAT, FAT32, EXT2, EXT3, and LINUX Swap are the only ones available to make. Confused . And should there be a Drive letter or not? I heard that linux does'nt use letters but I need everyones preference

Ext3 is the next best imho.

Yeah, just shrink your partition and let Ubuntu format.

Click on the pic and please tell me what to do, elfprince is IMing me but I would like a non confusing two opions.
You should have already shrunk one of your hdd with Partition Magic, leaving some unformatted free space (like at least 15GB).
well, the DEMO kinda does'nt let you do anything and I dont know how to download it with out buying it again, I have a valid product key but I dont have the setup, heh. Kinda lost there.

Ummm, read that other topic. And Kllrnohj, I _do_ know what I'm talking about. I mentioned our dilemma to one of the top Linux people at the top engineering school in the country (Rolling Eyes) and he said Ext3 would be the next best option after reseirfs (sp?), since it's the most backwards compatible. He said that if an ext3 system is shut down stably, it's actually readable even as ext2 because the journalling is stored separately. So there. Smile
