This. The 3D was used much the same way as color film in the Wizard of Oz, to make the fantasy world seem more "real" than the real world.

And in that way I'd say it was used more effectively than the 3d in Avatar, et. al, even if it wasn't as breath-taking. It contributed to the realism of the visuals in a tangible way without distracting you from what was actually going on.
I wouldn't say that Avatar's 3D was distracting, but I do think Tron made better use of the tech as an artistic tool.

I thought Tron's 3D was a complete waste of my money. Avatar's was very good, Tron's was annoying - very little additional depth, nothing worth the expense of degraded IQ from the glasses (IMAX 3D).
Having seen it in both 2d and 3d I have to disagree.
Same here. It wasn't impressive, but it wasn't supposed to be. It was supposed to artistically differentiate between the "real" world and the fantasy one.
Tron is just awesome. But if you ask me, the best part of the movie is the style. If I get enough money, I will build a computer, laptop, tablet, phone, calc, and car that are all just like in the movie. Even though that would be horribly expensive, I still want it. And having those sticks would be so cool. I wouldn't have to pay for a parking spot, and I would also have the coolest ride in town.

Imagine driving the Light Runner down the street, or landing the Rectifier at the airport. Epic.
As an fyi, the computer in the movie is running some version of SunOS/Solaris. http://tron.wikia.com/wiki/SolarOS
