Is there anywhere where I can change something to make the vRAM work in 8-bit mode without setting up the xlibC color palette?

Yes, you need to set the proper LCD configuration, which can be found here: http://wikiti.brandonw.net/index.php?title=84PCE:Ports:4000 (search for LCDControl).

Not only did this help me set up the vRAM in 8-bit mode, it also helped me use it in RGB565 mode.
