Now that that's done with, I've been cruising around the cemewebz lately, and, somewhat suprisingly, I have found that the majority of the games being created are ports of pre-existing games. This kind of bugs me, as I think completely user-created stuff is awesome! There's so much to be done with a restriction-free ability to program! Anyways, I just wanted to put this out there and ask if this is somewhat odd to you guys. Programming is awesome, and so are calcs! I can't wait to get started!

The simple explanation is that being a programmer is not the same as being a game designer. I'm pretty okay at programming, but that doesn't mean I have any particularly good game ideas. It's a lot easier, especially given a new system (like the CSE was when I made a few ports to it) to use an existing idea and run with it. Everything is a remix anyway, so even very original game designs have some influence. Sometimes it's easier to just make it 100% influence

In recent years, color calcs have come out almost yearly, breaking compatibility with past calculators and while some programs still worked, some people wanted to see old games in color. This contributed to the recent upsurge in ports IMHO. In fact I myself remade one of my 2002 games for the CSE. The original, while also having display problems in the village, looked like crap on that calc IMHO.
